Holley's 'ship in flames' sighting
A forest lookout named Earl Holley observed what he believed to be a tanker in flames near Fort Ross, California on July 3, 1947. A Navy or Coast Guard search found nothing, and the nearby Soviet tanker Elbruz was confirmed to be all right.
